A Field of Whales

So we're going to have at least one new song for the show on the 28th! I'm working on a piece inspired by an experience on a research trip from which I recently returned. We were on a ship sailing down the coast of California. One foggy afternoon, we found ourselves surrounded by at least 50 (probably more) whales, surfacing to breathe, then settling back down into the water. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen; whales rising and falling, sending sprays of breath into the misty air all around us. I wish I was a better photographer and could have captured the scale and beauty of the entire group, but I did manage this shot of a whale's tail as it slipped under the surface.

Hi, friends! It's high time Focusbird had a blog. I'm not sure what the function of this blog will be, but I envision it being a great place to share updates on new songs, performances, thoughts, and other Focusbird developments. There hasn't been much Focusbird activity recently, but we will be making some new recordings shortly, so be sure to check out our Myspace page. Meanwhile, I will leave you with this video of the very first Focusbird performance at The Furnace in Isla Vista, CA, last November. What a warm, welcoming crowd!
